Methodology and sources
kWh by ZIP turns the Energy Information Administration’s annual utility filings into a page per utility, so you can see what homes in your area actually pay for electricity.
What we publish
- Average residential price for each utility in each state: residential revenue ÷ residential kWh sold in 2025, from EIA Form 861 “Sales to Ultimate Customers.” We also show commercial and industrial averages and the 2024 figure for comparison.
- Average use and bill: kWh sold ÷ customers ÷ 12, and that use × the average price.
- State and U.S. averages from EIA’s own 2025 Average Monthly Bill table, and the latest monthly state price (August 2026) from Electric Power Monthly Table 5.6.A. Monthly figures for 2026 are preliminary and EIA revises them.
- Provider type: full-service utilities (EIA “bundled” service), energy-only suppliers and delivery-only utilities. For delivery-only utilities the price is the delivery charge alone.
- ZIP lookup: NREL’s 2024 ZIP-to-utility file links a ZIP to EIA utility IDs, which we match to the 2025 EIA data. ZIPs and service areas don’t line up exactly, and utilities that changed after 2024 may be missing from a ZIP.
What we leave out
Pages for providers with fewer than 1,000 residential customers, or with values EIA marks as imputed, are kept out of search results because small samples swing a lot. Utility pages leave out behind-the-meter (rooftop solar) records and EIA’s statewide adjustment rows; state averages are EIA’s own and include them. Most Texas wires companies do not report residential sales to EIA, so they have no page.
How we build it
A script downloads the EIA and NREL files, records each file’s date and checksum, and rebuilds every page. Nothing is typed by hand. We rebuild when EIA posts new annual data (usually in the fall) and each month for the monthly table.
